Every week at Mustache Sports, we will go back and let you know how we did against the spread while giving you a quick recap of Sunday’s NFL action. Historically speaking, it’s easier to pick against the spread at the beginning of the year so next week, Bert and I need to do better than 8-7-1.
If you think you are so smart, shoot me your picks against the spread and I’ll post them.
This week’s recap was done by Sef Sam Holy.
Saints +4.5 PACKERS
PACKERS 42 Saints 34
This was by far the best game to watch of week one. I thought the Packers looked a little 2007 Patriotsish in the first half. Allowing the Saints back in the game and actually giving them a chance to tie it up when you had a 15 point lead in the 4th quarter at home could be cause for concern, but I doubt any Packer fan is “worried” about their team right now.

Steelers +1.5 RAVENS
RAVENS 35 Steelers 7
Yikes! I don’t think the Steelers play that bad the rest of the way, but wow, they were horrible. Good thinking by CBS though, thanks for not having this game on and allowing people in Chicago to watch the Texans blow out the Colts.

Falcons – 3 BEARS
BEARS 30 Falcons 12
Honestly, this game wasn’t even THAT close. The Bears dominated the entire game and looked like a team that is poised to make a serious run at the playoffs. It’s going to be interesting to see how many games Cutler can run his “no turnover” streak to, so far, it’s at one.

Lions +1.5 BUCS
Lions 27 BUCS 20
I’ll say right now that if Matt Stafford stays healthy for the entire season he ends up a top 6 fantasy QB and the Lions win 11 games. With that out of the way, I think he misses some time and the Lions finish 9-7 and miss the playoffs.

Bills +6 CHIEFS
Bills 41 CHIEFS 7
Fred Jackson ran for over 100 yards, CJ Spiller scored a TD, Fitzpatrick threw 4 TD’s and Stevie Johnson looked like a legitimate top 10 WR. The Bills might be a better fantasy team than projected. I’m not sure if I’d pin them a playoff team just yet but they are 5-4 in their last 9 games.

Titans +2.5 JAGS
JAGS 16 Titans 14
Chris Johnson laid an egg but the Titans still covered. With Manning being out, many people who aren’t riding on the Texans bandwagon, picked the Titans to win the AFC South. After Sunday, I’m not sure that’s happening anymore.

Colts +9 TEXANS
TEXANS 34 Colts 7
This game was a blowout from the jump. We sort of expect the Colts to not be as good with Manning out, but Sunday they looked like a team that will be picking Andrew Luck with the first pick in next year’s draft. The defense can’t stop the run and the Texans did whatever they wanted even without Arian Foster. Ben Tate showed everyone why Foster can take his time in coming back.

Bengals +6.5 BROWNS
Bengals 27 BROWNS 17
In a game that caused you to be eliminated in your suicide pool week one, the Bengals knocked off the Browns. This was the year many thought, myself included, the Browns were supposed to make a jump and take advantage of a very soft early schedule. Cleveland is the new Houston.

Eagles -4.5 RAMS
Eagles 31 RAMS 13
Michael Vick looked horrible, but that all gets hidden behind the 28 fantasy points and big Eagles win. Meanwhile, the Rams were killed with injuries Sunday and football fans everywhere are wondering if a 6-10 team will win the NFC West.

Giants -3 REDSKINS
REDSKINS 28 Giants 14
Sexy Rexy was super sexy this Sunday. Will he be good the rest of the way and lead the Redskins to a playoff birthday? No, the Giants are bad. However, he could overtake Eli Manning in the “who is the best 3rd sting fantasy football QB.”

Panthers +7 CARDINALS
CARDINALS 28 Panthers 21
Cam Newton killed it Sunday throwing for over 400 yards in his “professional” debut. I do think the Panthers will be better than most people think winning 6 games instead of the 4 many predict. And what does all that mean? Nothing, let’s move on.

Seahawks +5.5 49ers
49ers 33 Seahawks 17
If you were forced to watch this game because of where you lived, I’m sorry. Or maybe you tuned in because you were a fair-weather football fan as a kid and liked the 49ers, either way, Tavaras Jackson against Alex Smith doesn’t sound like a way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

Vikings +8.5 CHARGERS
CHARGERS 24 Vikings 17
Without the opening kick return for a touchdown, the Vikings offense only mustered 10 points. AP looked like a beast, but Minnesota only threw for 39 yards. 39 yards passing, for the game, by an entire team. Meanwhile Philip Rivers marched the Chargers down the field against a tired Vikings D to get the Bolts off to a 1-0 start.

Cowboys +4 JETS
JETS 27 Cowboys 24
Dez Bryant looked like he was going to score 50 fantasy points after the first 6 minutes of the game but things slowed down and Tony Romo turned into Tony Romo. I wasn’t overly impressed with the Jets but a win is a win. I’ll still take the Cowboys to win 11 games this year but they have to be better in the 4th quarter (what an insightful thought).

Patriots -7 DOLPHINS
Patriots 38 DOLPHINS 24
The big story of this game was that Tom Brady threw for 517 yards while wearing Uggs. The Dolphins did play better than the score would indicate. I’m happy the Pats covered but don’t think their defense was as good as many people anticipated.

Raiders +3 BRONCOS
Raiders 23 BRONCOS 20
I have to be honest, I didn’t watch one bit of this game because I went to bed early. However, I did wake up and hear that the big story from the game was a long field goal so yeah, I’m pretty happy about the decision I made yesterday.
